For many Nigerian youths who dream to play professional football, the opportunities to advance their career has been very limited. Many lack the financial capacity to access quality football education and opportunities. The Turf Season project has been able to bridge the gap with their innovative approach to talent identification and promotion.
Turf Season is a sports for development program helping grassroots talents access education and career opportunities with the overall aim to improve lives. It’s a football project giving talented grassroots youth footballers a platform to showcase their skills and attract football career opportunities both locally and internationally. Turf Season project involves using the power of media and technology to identify, expose and build capacity of these hidden talents whose careers die early due to lack of exposure, structure and opportunities.
There is no doubt that Nigeria has a huge deposit of talents in the grassroots. The fact that we have won the FIFA U17 World Cup five times at this level already over-emphasizes this. However, the career opportunities for young talents have been very few and as such many beautiful football careers die early.
Turf Season is also the first football reality show and will showcase the best of Nigeria’s youth football for 25 weeks, targeting millions of viewers across the world. The show will be a robust platform to give young talents the much-needed profile to attract and secure football career opportunities both locally and internationally.
“The need to create a platform for talented young players to achieve their dreams of playing football at the highest level is what gave birth to the idea of the show”, said Paschal Agonsi, Executive Producer of the Show. “The world is looking forward to the next football superstar and Nigeria has the talents to produce that. We are working hard to put the necessary structures in place to ensure only the best talents are discovered and promoted”.
Turf Season will also be an opportunity for these upcoming talents to learn about the football career as it will provide not just entertainment but an avenue for the Nigerian grassroots football talents to learn the rudiments of the football career.
The focus is not just football as participants will be required to learn other skills to help them cater for themselves after football. These players will be involved in an intensive training program for 25 Weeks which involves various games against local and international football teams, as well as participation in various leadership and community service projects.
Turf Season promises to be an exciting football project and it’s open to fresh football talents between the ages of 15 to 21, who have no professional experience in the game. The 2018 Tryouts is a screening program to select 25 youth talents (U21) that will be form the Turf Season 2018 Squad. Goalkeepers (3), Defenders (8), Midfielders (8) and Attackers (6) will make up the 25-man strong team that will be part of an exciting and entertaining football project.
